Professor Ashraf M. Salama
Professor Ashraf M. Salama is Professor of Architecture and Urbanism and Head of the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle. He also serves as Co-Director of the UNESCO–UIA Architectural Education Commission in Paris. Over the past 25 years, he has led four schools of architecture in Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom, two of which he founded. These include Misr International University in Cairo (1996–2001), Qatar University in Doha (2009–2014), the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (2014–2020), where he subsequently served as Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange (2020–2022), and the University of Northumbria (since 2022). He holds B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD in Architecture and has received his education at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA.
Professor Salama has secured more than £2.7 million in research funding and published over 250 outputs in the international refereed press; authored and co-edited more than 20 books. He is the Chief Editor of the Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, Honorary Editor of Open House International, and Co-Chief Editor of ABC2: Journal of Architecture, Building, Construction, and Cities.
